Gerald Potterton was a British-Canadian director, producer, writer, and animator. Gerald has gained popularity for his animation of “Yellow Submarine” and for directing “cult classic heavy metal”. Gerald was nominated three times for the Academy Award for “Animated Short Film” Including as a producer for The Selfish Giant, as a director of animated shorts “My Financial Career”, and Christmas Cracker.

Gerald was born on 8 March 1931 in London, England. On 23 August 2022, he died at the age of 91 in Cowansville, Quebec, Canada due to a health ailment. Gerald completed his schooling at Hammersmith Art School. Gerald began his career as an assistant animator in London. Gerald Potterton joined the NFB in 1954, directing live-action and animated films. Worked on Buster Keaton in 1965 on The Railroader and Harold Pinter on Pinter’s People in 1969.
Gerald also wrote a few books including In the Wake of Giants: Journey on the Barrow and the Grand Canal and Scouse the Mouse. Gerald worked on many projects, including Huff and Puff, My Financial Career, The Ride, Cool McCool, Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow, Tiki Tiki, The Remarkable Rocket, The Awful Fate of Melpomenus Jones, The Emerald City of Oz, The Real Story of Baa Baa Black Sheep, The Real Story of Happy Birthday to You, and more.
