$ex and the City star Frances Sternhagen dies at the age of 93

Frances Sternhagen, the experienced character actor known for winning two Tony Awards, and recognized by TV audiences for her roles in shows like Cheers, ER, $ex and the City, and The Closer, has passed away at the age of 93.

Sternhagen passed away peacefully of natural causes on Monday, as her son John Carlin shared in an emotional Instagram statement on Wednesday. He honored her rich, passionate, humble, and generous life, saying, “Fly on, Franny.” Sternhagen’s publicist confirmed the news, mentioning that she died in New Rochelle, New York.

The accomplished actress earned Tony Awards for her notable performances, winning in 1974 for The Good Doctor and in 1995 for The Heiress. Her Broadway tour continued until 2005 with her role in Seascape. Sternhagen received Tony nominations four times for her roles in various plays.

Television audiences remember her as the wealthy grandmother of Dr. John Carter (Noah Wyle) on ER and as the knowledgeable mother of Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger) on Cheers, a role that earned her two Emmy nominations. In more recent times, she had memorable roles as Bunny McDougal on $ex and the City, which earned her her third Emmy nomination, and as Kyra Sedgwick’s mother on The Closer. In the 1960s, soap opera fans knew him as Tony Prentice Davis from Love of Life, a character who carried a gun and faced challenging situations.

Sternhagen was a married woman. Her husband’s name is Thomas Carlin. They have four sons, Tony, Paul, Peter, and John, and two daughters, Amanda and Sarah. Sternhagen also has nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
