On October 18, the Center approved the release of the convicts in two weeks, highlighting the Gujarat government’s affidavit to the Supreme Court.
In 2004, the Supreme Court transferred the case to the CBI. In 2008, a special court ordered life imprisonment to 11 violators for rape and murder. The High Court in 2017 convicted 5 policemen and 2 doctors, who were charged with supporting the violators and destroying evidence.
In April 2019, the Supreme Court ordered the blocking of retirement pensions for 4 retired policemen and the promotion of a fifth policeman (IPS) who did not investigate the matter properly. The Supreme Court also ordered the Gujarat government to give 50 lakh compensation and a government job to Bilkis.
Later, all the 11 people arrested in the gang rape case were released from Godhra Jail on 15 August 2022 (Monday). The Gujarat government allowed his release under its exemption policy.
