On 28 September 2022, the Narendra Modi-led government appointed Chouhan as the second Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), becoming the first three-star retiree to be appointed to the four-star rank. He replaced General Bipin Rawat, who had died in a helicopter crash nine months ago in December 2021.
