Boyfriend of Pregnant Woman Found Dead Allegedly Spoke to Her Lifeless Body, Police Say

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN — Police in Wisconsin have arrested a man accused of disturbing behavior following the death of his pregnant girlfriend, alleging he pretended to speak to her lifeless body and deliberately blocked family members from checking on her as she lay unresponsive inside their home.

The victim, 22-year-old Gladys Johnson-Ball, was five months pregnant when she was found unconscious in a bedroom after a house fire. Authorities say her boyfriend, 21-year-old Cameron Washington, attempted to conceal the seriousness of her condition for hours before emergency responders were alerted.

Family Kept Away From Bedroom

According to investigators, family members repeatedly attempted to enter the bedroom where Johnson-Ball was located throughout the day. Washington allegedly stopped them, insisting she was sleeping and should not be disturbed. Witnesses told police he spoke aloud to her, creating the impression that she was still alive.

Relatives became increasingly concerned after receiving no response from her. When they finally gained access to the room, they found her unresponsive and immediately pulled her out as smoke filled the home.

Emergency crews rushed Johnson-Ball to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Signs of Violence Discovered

Medical examiners observed bruising on Johnson-Ball’s arms, face, and neck, raising serious concerns of physical assault prior to her death. Investigators believe she had already been dead for hours before help was summoned.

Police say Washington’s explanations did not align with medical findings, prompting further investigation into his actions before and after her death.

Alleged Threats and Fire Investigation

Authorities also allege that Washington became aggressive when asked to leave the home, at one point threatening family members and forcing them to retreat. He fled the scene before police arrived but was later taken into custody nearby.

Fire investigators determined the blaze originated inside the home, adding arson-related charges to the case. A lighter was reportedly found on Washington at the time of his arrest.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Washington has been charged with multiple offenses, including arson, reckless endangerment, and firearm-related violations. While homicide charges have not yet been finalized, authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible.

A judge ordered Washington held on a high cash bond, citing the seriousness of the allegations and potential danger to the community. His next court appearance is scheduled later this month.

Community Mourning and Ongoing Investigation

Johnson-Ball’s death has deeply shaken the community. Family members described her as a devoted mother who was excitedly preparing to welcome a new baby. A young child was also inside the home during the incident but was not physically harmed.

As investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to her death, loved ones are calling for accountability and justice.

A Tragic Case Under Scrutiny

The case highlights troubling patterns of domestic violence and delayed emergency response that authorities say can have fatal consequences. Police urge anyone who suspects abuse or witnesses suspicious behavior to report it immediately, stressing that early intervention can save lives.
